The Neurosciences Institute was the operating name for the scientific activities of the Neurosciences Research Foundation, Incorporated ("NRF") from 1981 to 2017. NRF is a non-profit scientific research organization dedicated to learning about the brain for the benefit of mankind. The Institute, founded by Nobel Laureate Gerald M. Edelman, focused its research on the principles underlying how we perceive and act upon the world, how we learn and remember, and how consciousness arises. The Institute carried out active research in experimental neurobiology until 2012 and continued its theoretical research program until 2017. Currently NRF is identifying new scientific leadership who will develop modes of encouraging dynamic interactions among scientists from the many disciplines relevant to understanding brain function.
On October 1, 2012, The Neurosciences Institute moved to new quarters in the village of La Jolla, where a vigorous theoretical research program continues. The focus is on understanding how consciousness arises from the activity of the nervous system, one of the most challenging subjects in neuroscience. |

The Torrey Pines Gliderport saw its first flights in 1928. The site has been the premier soaring site for the United States and a place of learning for national heroes such as Charles and Ann Lindbergh.
It provides instruction, certification, tandem flights, quality equipment sales, adventure tours, repair services, year round flying paragliding, hang gliding, and remote control gliders. Gliderport is owned and operated by avid paraglider pilot and instructor David Jebb.

This little-known sector of the Reserve is located on the north side of Penasquitos Lagoon, and is accessible only via residential neighborhoods. The rewards are great: mature trees, ocean and lagoon views, and much more solitude than you can experience in the main part of the Reserve. Wildflowers and birds are abundant here. Trails are easy to moderate, most with little elevation gain. To get to the main trail head, drive to Torrey Pines Reserve's north parking lot on Carmel Valley Road. Instead of entering the lot, drive up the hill on Del Mar Scenic Parkway. Drive to its end, where you'll find the trail head. |

Black's Beach is a 2-mile long sandy strip jointly owned by the City and State, a 25-minute walk from Blackhorse. It is known as Torrey Pines City Beach and Torrey Pines State Beach. Access is very difficult due to the high cliffs and lack of improved stairways. The safest access is from a UCSD paved road off La Jolla Farms Rd. or from adjacent beaches to the north and south, but the latter will be obstructed by high tides. The cliffs of Black's Beach are unstable and slides can occur without warning, so it is best to stay well away from them. Although not officially sanctioned, some patrons of Black's Beach practice nudism. |

Children's Pool is a small beach partially protected by a seawall. The original intention was to create a fully protected swimming area, but sand has filled in much of the area inside the wall. This is a very picturesque beach with a panoramic view. During much of the year, seals and sea lions are present on or near the beach and a reserve for these marine mammals, called Seal Rock, is just offshore. |

Since 1990, Dr. Stephen Leatherman ("Dr. Beach") has reviewed, evaluated and rated beaches and coastal areas throughout the world. In addition to his annual ranking of America's Best Beaches, many in Southern California, he works tirelessly to increase awareness about the dangers of rip currents.
"Coronado Beach is the number one beach in the 22nd annual Top 10 Beach List, produced by coastal expert Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, a professor at Florida International University. Coronado Beach in San Diego is a 1.5 mile long, wide sandy beach set against the backdrop of the iconic Hotel del Coronado with its peaked red roof and classic Victorian architecture. The beach is popular for swimmers, surfers, sunbathers and beachcombers. The beach is very flat, making it great for skim boarding and walking, and the sand has a silvery sheen because of the presence of mica. Families arrive in the morning, toting umbrellas, beach towels and picnic coolers for an all-day stay. A great team of lifeguards stands watch.
Coronado is a quaint small town combined with sophisticated luxury and the wonderful Mediterranean climate. The best way to get around town is by bicycling on the relatively flat, mile- long city of Coronado. A scenic way to reach Coronado is by pedestrian ferry or water taxi from downtown San Diego. "

San Diego - Scripps Coastal MCA Black's Beach |
|
Marine Protective Areas (MPAs) in California include the San Diego - Scripps Coastal State Marine Conservation Area (SMCA), established in 2012 is located off Black's Beach and is the closest MPA to Blackhorse.
MPAs often referred to as "underwater state parks." They are small areas where laws restrict or prohibit extractive use (such as fishing or kelp harvest). MPAs increase fish populations by providing a safe haven where fish can live and grow larger, increasing the likelihood of successful reproduction. San Diego's MPAs, which range from the Batiquitos Lagoon No-Take State Marine Conservation Area in the north to the Tijuana River Mouth State/Federal Marine Conservation area in the south, provide important protection to wildlife along the coast of Southern California, and they also preserve our heritage as surfers, swimmers, kayakers, and beachgoers. |

Dedicated to empowering people to be healthier in spirit, mind and body, the Y believes a strong community can only be achieved when we invest in our kids, our health and our neighbors. As a leading nonprofit organization, the Y offers programs that foster youth development, promote healthy living and advance social responsibility.
In 2005 expanded Health and Fitness Center and new Group Exercise Studio. Cardio workout area, Racquetball Courts, an exclusive free-weights space and group exercise classes. Group exercise studio with state-of-the-art sound, climate control, wooden flooring, floor-to-ceiling mirrors, and large west-facing windows with ocean views.
